Pour comprendre le travail d’un architecte ou d’un designer, percevoir justement la direction de son dessin, il faut trouver son contrepoint, sa ligne de fuite. Pour Joran Briand, c’est l’océan. S’il est reconnu pour ses inclusions urbaines – il a réalisé les immenses résilles de béton du Mucem et du stade Jean-Bouin pour Rudy Ricciotti –, le travail de ce jeune designer formé à Olivier de Serres et à l’École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris n’a de cesse de rechercher la mer, le grand large, le flux continu des vagues qui déferlent.
Lorsqu’il dessine un tabouret en toile de jute pour SaintLuc, c’est une amarre qui se profile. Quand il initie l’exposition collective Granit, il contribue par une planche de surf aux inclusions de broderie. Même le prototype de son banc en béton conçu pour Vinci semble s’étirer vers la houle… C’est ainsi, inspiré par sa connaissance profonde de l’architecture, que Joran Briand interroge toujours la dimension de l’objet. Il impose à ses créations un dialogue à une échelle plus vaste, celle de la structure, du bâtiment – de l’espace.
To understand the work of an architect or a designer, to perceive his drawing intention, you need to find his conterpoint, his convergence line. For Joran Briand it is the ocean. If he is known for his urban integrations like the vast concrete nets of the Mucem and the Jean-Bouin stadium for Rudy Ricciotti, the work of this young designer trained in Olivier de Serres and the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris always head to the open sea, to the waves unbroken flow.
When he draws a gunny stool for SaintLuc, it is a mooring post that emerges. When he organizes the Granit group exhibition, he contributes by a surfboard with embroidery inclusions. Even the prototype of his concrete bench for Vinci seems to stretch to the swell… That’s with this inspiration and his deep understanding of architecture that Joran Briand always question the object. He requires for each creation a dialogue to a larger scale, the one of structure, of building, of space.
